The art and culture of China’s Silk Road was brought into the spotlight on New Year’s Eve in New York by Sino-American Friendship Association (SAFA), as Chinese performances took over the 2017 Times Square New Year’s Eve countdown on Dec 31st. 2016. This year was the sixth year that Chinese culture has been represented at the Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop celebration since 1907.

With the theme of “Explore Beautiful China along the Silk Road”, SAFA celebrated the Silk Road, which over 2,000 years ago opened the pathway to trade and cultural exchange between China and Western world. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote in his greeting letter to SAFA: "Much like that ancient commerce network, the Association has also fostered international exchange and I am grateful for its efforts tonight to enhance the cultural landscape of our global city and unite and entertain Chinese Americans and New Yorkers of all backgrounds."

All of Times Square was embellished with the color known as “China Red” as most visitors wore red scarves symbolizing “Happy New Year 2017 New York” and “China Welcomes You” which brought some warmth in the cold winter evening.

When the Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball first rose on the Duffy Square Countdown Stage at 6p.m. EST on December 31st, Chinese and American officials delivered greetings while Chinese singers and dancers showcased songs and dances from Northwest China to the world.
